Protected Species Surveys
The ecologists and associates at Windrush Ecology are able to undertake a variety of specialist protected and priority species survey work, including surveys for European Protected Species. We offer the following surveys for species:

If you are proposing work that may affect a bat roost, such as building works, then you will likely need a bat survey.
A great crested newt survey is likely to be required when ponds are affected by proposals, or there the potential for great crested newt terrestrial habitat to be affected.
Windrush Ecology has both in-house bird survey expertise but also work with a number of specialist ornithologists to deliver expert ornithological surveys. This includes breeding bird surveys and over-wintering bird surveys.
Optimal times for reptile surveying are between April and September, when reptiles are most active and more likely to be observed.
Badgers are protected by the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 and so their presence on a site needs to be carefully considered from both a legal and welfare perspective.
The otter is protected from killing, injury, capture and disturbance. The places that they use for shelter and protection are also protected from damage and destruction.
The water vole was once very common but has recently suffered dramatic declines in its abundance and distribution as a result of predation by mink and habitat loss and degradation.
Because of its rarity and dependence on ancient, species-rich woodland, the dormouse is a European Protected Species and receives full protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
We have a particular specialism in surveying for butterflies and moths, including the use of light traps for moth surveying.
