Dr Edward (Ted) Bodsworth

MA (Cantab) PhD MCIEEM

Ted has been working as a professional ecologist since completing his PhD in 2001. Prior to setting up Windrush Ecology in 2009, Ted worked as a Conservation Officer at The Wildlife Trust, as a Principal Ecologist for a leading UK ecological consultancy and on a number of overseas projects involving rapid biodiversity assessment of protected habitats in Vietnam, China and Madagascar. Ted’s principal area of expertise is bat ecology and bat surveys, and he has expert knowledge of all UK bat species and bat survey methodologies and holds Level 3 & Level 4 licences from Natural England to survey for bats. He has held a multitude of bat licences over the years and is a Registered Consultant for the Bat Mitigation Licence Scheme. Ted’s research background is in the conservation of British Lepidoptera and he continues to undertake specialist butterfly and moth surveys. In addition, he has a particularly strong interest in botanical surveying and a broad knowledge of natural history in general. Outside of ecology, Ted is a keen gardener and also a part-time fitness instructor.

Jan-Piet moved from the Netherlands to become a consultant ecologist in 2018. He previously worked for a number of consultancies, charities and landowners in the Netherlands, specialising in nature reserve conservation and management for 27 years. Since moving to the UK, Jan-Piet has obtained a Level 2 licence from Natural England to survey for bats and bat surveying is one of his expertise, along with other protected species surveys including badgers, barn owls and great crested newts. A specialist Ecological Clerk of Works, Jan-Piet has worked on a wide range of ECoW projects ranging from soft demolition and roofing, rescuing bats where necessary, to large solar farms and nationally significant infrastructure projects. Outside of ecology, Jan-Piet is a licenced skipper and has sailed all over the world, for both work and pleasure, as well as having won numerous regattas in the Netherlands. He’s also a keen gardener and allotment holder.

Reuben Hayden

Reuben joined Windrush Ecology in 2019 after graduating from The University of the West of England with a degree in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Science. In 2020 he graduated from The University of Reading with a masters in Species Identification and Survey Skills. Holding licences from Natural England to survey bats (Level 2) and great crested newts (Level 1), Reuben’s experience stretches from Ecological Impact Assessments and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments to Protected Species Surveys including bats, great crested newts, reptiles, badgers, water voles and otters. In his spare time, Reuben is a keen wildlife photographer and orchid enthusiast.

Catrin joined Windrush Ecology in 2022 shortly after graduating from Bangor University with a degree in Environmental Conservation. Catrin has 3 and a half years’ experience at bat surveying and holds a Level 1 licence from Natural England to survey for bats. Catrin has a particular interest in UK bat species and looks forward to increasing her knowledge of bats from all around the globe. Catrin has undertaken multiple training courses with CIEEM and The Species Recovery Trust to improve her botany and QGIS skills. Outside of work, Catrin loves to travel and enjoys rock climbing, horse riding and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

A recent addition to the team, Claire joined Windrush Ecology at the beginning of 2025 after graduating from the Czech University of Life Sciences with a master’s in Nature Conservation. During her first year with Windrush Ecology, Claire has gained experience in Ecological Impact Assessments, Biodiversity Net Gain, and protected species surveys, with a particular focus on bats. Her background lies in large African mammals, having completed research into African forest elephant behaviour in the forests of the Congo basin utilising camera trapping technology. She is now branching out into somewhat smaller mammals and developing her botanical surveying skills. In her free time, Claire enjoys long walks in the countryside and working on a range of DIY projects.

Based in Witney in West Oxfordshire & Wallingford in South Oxfordshire, Windrush Ecology is a specialist ecological consultancy providing a service to clients primarily within the counties of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Gloucestershire; although we are involved in ecological projects throughout England. Our client base covers the private and public sectors and includes developers, government and non-governmental organisations, environmental consultants, private estates, architects, planning consultants, landscape designers and engineers.

Our ecological consultants specialise in ecological scoping, habitat surveys, protected species surveys, Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA), Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA), ecological mitigation strategies and of course Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Assessments. We have particular experience and expertise with regard to historic buildings and landscapes including churches, listed buildings, cathedrals, historic parklands, barns, stately homes and palaces. We specialise in bat ecology, bat surveys and bat licensing which are often required when dealing with historic buildings!

Ecologists at Windrush Ecology are specialists in a range of habitat and species survey techniques and hold relevant licences to work with key protected species, particularly those encountered on a more regular basis such as bats and great crested newts. We also offer a wealth of knowledge on mitigation and compensation measures, habitat design, butterfly ecology, butterfly and moth surveys, habitat creation and management. We work with a network of specialist associates to provide the highest quality ecological advice to our clients, including arboricultural services, entomology and ornithology. Above all, we are dedicated to the conservation of habitats and species through sustainable development and good practice.

Our head office at Howbery Park in Wallingford allows us to provide competitive ecological services throughout Oxfordshire and within the nearby counties of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. Howbery Park offers extensive conference facilities for meetings and training events and is the UK’s first solar-powered business park. Our base in Witney, West Oxfordshire allows us to provide our services within Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and throughout The Cotswolds.
